Other Settlements Review

Directions: Under each complete the phrase, answer the question, fill in the blank, or define the definition.

Describe initial Spanish exploration of the New World:
They went to Ponce de Leonce in search of the fountain of Youth, and then Vosco Nunez Balboa went though Panama to find the Pacific Ocean. After that Cortes conquered the Aztecs, and then Pizarro conquered the Inca in Peru.

Describe Spanish exploration of what would become US including their treatment of Indians:
The Indians told them where to find gold which was in the Pueblos but the Spanish found out that they were being lied to because when they got there they found nothing and came back to kill them.

Describe French Exploration of the New World:
Verrazano and Cartier two French explores set sail for the new world to find the Northwest Passage. The French king claimed the region that they explored around which is the mouth of the St.Lawrence River. To get rid of rivals the French built a fort on the River and made Quebec. The French did fight with the Indians because they were trading fur with them.

Describe French founding of New Orleans:
First in 1682 Robert de La Salle wanted to find to find a Northwest Passage instead made his way south on Mississippi River. He claimed the land around the Mississippi River Basin for France after he got to the Gulf of Mexico, and named it New Orleans.

Describe Dutch Exploration in North America:
The Dutch had formed a Permanent settlement at Fort Nassau or New Netherlands. To guard the mouth of the Hudsan River they built New Amsterdam at the tip of Manhattan Island giving them a good seaport. In 1664 New York was born the English rivals to the Dutch forced them to give up their colonies in which they renamed it New York and New Amsterdam was renamed New York City.

Describe the discovery of Pennsylvania:
Pennsylvania was a paid debt by King Charles II to Quaker William Penn. The King gave it to him as a proprietary colony which soon came to be a great place to grow crops because of it rich soil, great water sources, and wonderful climate.
